Disability

Our work in the field of disability had its genesis in a meeting three years ago with the Secretary of Servites Net, a network that is part of the LAMP Net network of NGOs in Cuddalore. This discussion resulted in Rose Trust workers and volunteers undergoing a three day capacity training programme at PCTC-Kariyandal which helped them gain information and education about disability.

Following the training, Rose Trust conducted a base line survey in 21 village Panchayats in Kurinjipady block of Cuddalore district. The survey showed that there were at least 699 persons with disability (411 male and 288 female) suffering from about 9 different forms of physical and mental disability.

The extent of different types of disability and the sheer numbers of persons with each handicap came as a shock to Rose Trust and galvanized us into submitting a project proposal for executing CBR programmes.

CBR Project
Rose Trust will implement the following activities through the project:
Basic training to the Board members and CBR workers on disability and developing skills for identifying persons with disability.
Developing tools for enhanced data collection about persons with disability
Collection, classification and presentation of data
Capacity Building
Identifying CBR volunteers
Conducting screening camps
Referral and Linkage services
Training the cultural team
Conducting village-level cultural programmes
Half yearly Experience Sharing and Review Meeting (ESRM)

Past Disability Activities
- We identified 32 physically disabled children from a low socio-economic background and conducted three treatment programmes at Osur, Vandavasi and Nelliyankulam villages. The resource persons were from FRDP, India and they addressed certain health issues faced by these children. We also distributed three tri-cycles.

- Medical Care and Physiotherapists Assistance: Under this programmes, a physiotherapist provided regular medical care to disabled children by regularly visiting the children in their respective villages and helping them do simple exercises which helped them children develop their health. Moreover, a team of trainers helped parents develop simple appliances with some available materials in order to aid the children. In addition, Rose Trust also provided wheel chairs, calipers and crutches to 22 children. The children with cleft palate were sent to ICCW Chennai for treatment.
